As a systems thinker, one of the most powerful tools in our arsenal is pattern recognition. It's about constantly observing the relationships between elements, layers, underlying dynamics, and the behavior of systems. Over the years, I've come to admire how biologists examine natural ecosystems or how architects like Ben van Berkel view the built environment. They look through a lens of form.
Systems thinking; recognizing the patterns
Through this lens, we begin to see less of the individual parts and more of the sum of those parts—the movement within the whole. How does a skyscraper relate to the adjacent forest in terms of shape and contours? Why do two seemingly different plants belong to the same family? How are words like "hound" and "cat" related (or not)? In this perspective, we look beyond logic and play with form.
Morphology, seeing in form (like a biologist , linguist or architect)
This approach invites us to challenge our assumptions and see the bigger picture. It's about asking "What if?" and exploring possibilities beyond conventional thinking; PLAY!!! By focusing on form, we can uncover connections and patterns that might otherwise remain hidden.
For now, it's about literally playing with form. Next time you observe your surroundings, try to see beyond the individual elements. Look for the patterns, the relationships, and the overall form. You might be surprised by what you might discover.
What if the model had no beginning or end? What if it is linear and thus directional (left, right but also top and bottom) or what if it is layered?
The philosopher Gregory Bateson provided a beautiful example of how our thoughts can lead to assumptions that prevent us from seeing the whole. (I'll need to look up the specific example to share it with you.)
