WHAT WOULD REVOLUT DO?

BANKING ON LIFE: SIMPLIFY ALL THINGS MONEY Revolut is a global fintech company that is continuously facilitating rapidly changing money behaviors in a world where finance is becoming borderless, digital, and emotionally driven. As people adopt new lifestyles, subscription-heavy spending habits, side hustles, and new forms of commerce and financial identity.
Their challenge is not predicting trends, but tracking deeper life patterns rather than industry norms.

Revolut treats its product as a living lab. User requests and newly spotted behaviors are instantly validated by launching new features for a limited audience. What works works. Through social listening and constant small-scale experiments, Revolut creates a long-term strategy rooted in understanding the future of money, not just the future of banking.

A NEW CATEGORY: FROM BANKING TO MONEY

Revolut is a fintech company, but it is neither a traditional bank nor a classic credit card. It is a category in its own right. When young people talk about Revolut, they say “I’ll send it to your Revolut,” not to your bank or your credit card. Revolut emerged alongside a far more nomadic, international generation, shaped by the gig economy, subscriptions, and a very different financial identity. For these users, money is not just about transactions or trust; it is also about shame and pride, lifestyle and self-expression. That is why Revolut does not look at the future of banking, but at the future of money—our relationship with it, our behavior, and our identity around it—far beyond current industry norms.

SPOTTING WEAK SIGNALS THROUGH MICRO-IDENTITIES

Because they operate so close to the front edge of change, Revolut focuses on picking up weak signals of deeper shifts rather than chasing every hype. Their ambition is a more stable trend horizon of around five years, not a few months. They do this through strong, continuous feedback loops with their users: constant observation of feature usage, dialogues, reviews, and direct feedback channels. In addition, they actively monitor platforms such as Discord and Reddit, especially subreddits, to explore the fringes of new behavior—from crypto curiosity to nomadic, lightweight financial lifestyles. These spaces reveal emerging micro-identities and specific “power moments” where money, behavior, and identity intersect in new ways.

BUILD MICRO FEATURE FIRST, LEARN IN REAL LIFE

Revolut’s mantra is simple: we don’t know either—so don’t overthink it. Instead of long brainstorms, internal debates, or extensive market research rooted in today’s assumptions, they move straight from insight to building. New features are Beta-launched quickly within small user groups as micro-launches, and learning happens through real-life usage, not reports. How do people actually use split bills, micro-investments, crypto alongside gig work, or shared accounts? What sticks becomes part of the product; what doesn’t quietly disappears. Their biggest source of insight is not polished concepts, but lived experience. In short: not the future of banking, but the future of money—and learning by building directly with the user.

Ask yourself:

  • “Not future of banking but future of money”
How could you reframe your domain?

  • What are key moments in the customer journey you could observe to listen for weak signals of changes of mentality or habits?

  • How could you use micro launches of new features to validate signals of new behaviors or needs?
